Driver fatigue is the main cause of more that 60% of our road crashes and fatalities on our roads. We have been losing 54 lives per day on our roads and government is spending more than R175 billion on road crashes. Somehow we have to address this huge killer on our roads.
Indications of driver fatigue:
Blinking from the eyes more than usual
Wandering on your way
Extensive yawning
Burning eyes
Double vision
Rise in hypertension
When these symptoms appear, you are suffering from driver fatigue.
“Take a break” will be on the N1 between Beaufort West and Laingsburg from your 15th December 2012 and 6th January 2013. The campsite will comprise of volunteers from Drive More Safely, Provincial traffic officials, SAPS Emergency and members personnel. Services include:
Offering of tea/coffee to tired drivers
Monitoring of blood pressure
Literature on road safety
Info on road safety tips
Child safety seats
When on vacation this festive season or on the road, please adhere to the rules of the road.
A few tips when on the road:
Make sure your vehicle is road worthy and all lighting is working
Before you driv, have a good night’s reste
Take enough fluids in order not to dehydrate
Stop every a couple of hours of 200km
Use a sun block
